Storyline
This should be plenty for The Fall of the House of Usher to leave an impression on viewers. Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) attends a joint funeral for a number of his adult children, and in a montage of press coverage, we see how a series of “freak accidents” has wiped out his entire bloodline. The Usher patriarch then sits in a dilapidated mansion with Carl Lumbly’s Auguste Dupin (based on Poe’s famous recurring character who is considered the first detective in fiction) and offers him a confession. We then flash back a few weeks to when the Usher clan were on top of the world, having become Sackler-esque billionaires peddling opiates that have inflicted untold misery on the American public, and begin to watch their painful demise. “It’s batshit crazy in the best possible way,” Carla Gugino told Netflix during production. “It has quite a lot of very dark humor, but also really touches the soul.” In the series, Gugino portrays a shape-shifter named Verna, whose origins can be traced back to a — let’s just say — very famous Poe character.
In film and television
Mike Flanagan teams up with Netflix once again to bring a horror classic to life. Flanagan has previously adapted the works of Shirley Jackson, Henry James, and Christopher Pike for Netflix. He’s currently taking on Mr. “The Raven” himself, Edgar Allan Poe, with a new Netflix limited series based on The Fall of the House of Usher. Flanagan has form with making tributes to some of horror’s most beloved oeuvres. He took on Shirley Jackson in The Haunting of Hill House (which was fabulous), Henry James in The Haunting of Bly Manor (spooky but saccharine) and Christopher Pike in The Midnight Club (meh). Thankfully, Flanagan and Poe’s sensibilities prove a winning pairing, staying on the edge of terror without cascading into jump scares and sentimentality.

The Black Cat, The Raven, The Masque of the Red Death, The Tell-Tale Heart, Lenore, and Annabel Lee are among Edgar Allan Poe’s most well-known stories. Flanagan and team will have a lot of potential material with Poe’s large body of work, even if they just focus on his most popular material. Just in time for spooky season, The Fall of the House of Usher streams on Netflix on October 12, 2023. A former model and actor, Morrie left that life behind her for a loving marriage and motherhood. She’s made her life’s work not only about spinning bad behavior into good press, but also collecting files filled with every dirty secret of those closest to her.
The Fall of the House of Usher review – a gleefully terrifying take on Edgar Allan Poe
The film was Corman's first in a series of eight films inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe. In 1956, NBC Matinee Theater on US television broadcast The Fall of the House of Usher starring Marshall Thompson and Tom Tryon for episode 197. In 1950, a British film version of The Fall of the House of Usher was produced starring Gwen Watford, Kay Tendeter and Irving Steen. A second silent film version, also released in 1928, was directed by James Sibley Watson and Melville Webber.
The younger version of Auguste was an investigator who sought to find the truth — and the good in people. A dedicated, kind, and thoughtful husband to Tamerlane, Bill (or BillT as his fitness followers call him) is more than happy to team up with his wife on their newest wellness venture. With only love for Tammy, Bill is always willing to do what will make her happy, even if it goes against his own desires.
Mark Hamill as Arthur Pym
As he relates the shield falling from off the wall, a hollow metallic reverberation can be heard throughout the house. At first, the narrator ignores the noises, but Roderick becomes increasingly hysterical. Roderick eventually declares that he has been hearing these sounds for days, and that they are being made by his sister, who was in fact alive when she was entombed.
Carl Lumbly as C. Auguste Dupin
Together, the twins have headed Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, establishing an empire of wealth, privilege and power — but at a cost. The family’s dark, shady past seemingly comes to light as heirs from the dynasty begin dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from Madeline and Roderick’s youth. Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood and Rahul Kohli join newcomers (to the Flanaverse) Mary McDonnell and Willa Fitzgerald.

While his neuroses make him an easy target for his siblings, Freddie’s fiery jealousy and compounding insecurity force him down a path that even those closest to Freddie are shocked to see. Incredibly intelligent, driven, and calculating, Madeline has always been the brains behind Fortunato. Whenever her brother falters, she’s always there to give him a push, making them a formidable duo. While she loves Roderick, her unrelenting drive and desire for success wouldn’t hold her back from stepping over him, if need be. The Martian Chronicles, a 1950 collection of stories by Ray Bradbury, contains a novella called "Usher II," a homage to Poe.
The narrator is the only character to escape the House of Usher, which he views as it cracks and sinks into the mountain lake. From his arrival, the narrator notes the family's isolationist tendencies, as well as the cryptic and special connection between Madeline and Roderick, the final living members of the Usher family. Throughout the tale and her varying states of consciousness, Madeline completely ignores the narrator's presence. After Roderick Usher claims that Madeline has died, the narrator helps Usher entomb Madeline in an underground vault despite noticing Madeline's flushed, lifelike appearance.
The first two episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023 before the Netflix release the following month, being viewed more than 13 million times in its first two weeks. It was met with positive reviews, with critics praising its production values, directing, and performances (in particular from Gugino, Greenwood and Mark Hamill), although they were divided on its narrative, notably in relation to the source materials. The Fall of the House of Usher is an American gothic horror drama television miniseries created by Mike Flanagan.
Its main character, William Stendahl, builds a house based on the specifications from Poe's story to murder his enemies. A television adaptation was produced by ATV for the ITV network in 1966 for the horror anthology series Mystery and Imagination. Like Madeline, Roderick is connected to the mansion, the titular House of Usher. He believes the mansion is sentient and responsible, in part, for his deteriorating mental health and melancholy. Despite this admission, Usher remains in the mansion and composes art containing the Usher mansion or similar haunted mansions.
Most of the flashbacks to a young Usher and Dupin are thin, especially compared to the wicked fun on display in the fates of the Usher children. It feels like padding to get episodes to a full hour when Flanagan and company could have leaned even more into the episodic structure that highlights a single Poe per chapter. With the initial announcement about The Fall of the House of Usher, the Intrepid Pictures team revealed that the limited series only has eight episodes. Most of Mike Flanagan’s previous TV shows have ranged from seven to ten episodes. The series is one episode longer than one of Flanagan’s most recent series, Midnight Mass, and an episode or two shorter than his previous shows, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and The Midnight Club.
But the themes remain the same—guilt, obsession, vengeance, and a supernatural sense of justice. Roderick Usher’s children are getting what they deserve, not merely because they are the fruit of a very poisoned tree but because they have made horrific decisions to stay in the shelter of wealth and privilege. In November 2023, Roderick Usher, the CEO of pharmaceutical company Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, loses all six of his children within two weeks. Auguste Dupin, an Assistant United States Attorney who dedicated his career to exposing Fortunato's corruption, to his childhood home, where he tells the true story of his family and unveils the Ushers' darkest secrets. To secure their fortune — and future — two ruthless siblings build a family dynasty that begins to crumble when their heirs mysteriously die, one by one. When one steps back and looks at the whole narrative of the season of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” it sags in places.
Over the next week, both Roderick and the narrator find themselves increasingly agitated. The narrator is impressed with Roderick's paintings and attempts to cheer him by reading with him and listening to his improvised musical compositions on the guitar. Roderick sings "The Haunted Palace", then tells the narrator that he believes the house he lives in to be alive, and that this sentience arises from the arrangement of the masonry and vegetation surrounding it. Mark Hamill joins The Fall of the House of Usher cast as Arthur Pym, the lawyer for the Usher family. Hamill is widely known for his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise.
